Scholarships

For Study Abroad

These scholarships fund participation in summer and year-long overseas Russian language programs.


The Language Flagship provides scholarship support for students in the Russian Flagship Program for Russian 20 and certain study abroad programs. If you are a current UCLA Flagship student, the application for this scholarship is here. The link to apply opens in April each year.

American Councils Scholarship for summer study of Russian is for applicants of an American Councils summer, semester, or academic-year online or overseas program. Awards range from $250 to $2,500.

Deadline: At time of application for an American Councils program

 


The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a summer study abroad opportunity for American college and university students to learn “critical” languages.

Deadline: November Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at 8:00 PM U.S. Eastern Time

 


The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad. To be eligible, students must be receiving a Pell grant at the time of award.

Deadline: October 5, 2023


The Boren Scholarship funds study abroad in world regions critical to U.S. interests. Awards range from $8,000 to $25,000. Applications must be submitted to the UCLA representative for Boren Scholarships (Wilsi Lieux, in the UCLA International Education Office).

Campus Deadline: January 15, 2024

 


The Air Force and Army offers yearly scholarships to Air Force/Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) students who enroll in a Language Flagship program. For more information, visit the Language Flagship’s ROTC Scholarships website.


The Suzan and Terry Kramer Centennial Endowment for International Internships supports undergraduate students engaged in qualified international internship experiences.

Deadline: TBA (spring, 2023)

For Research

These scholarships fund undergraduate research projects.



The URSP scholarship is awarded to juniors and seniors who are completing a comprehensive independent research or creative project, capstone project, or a departmental honors thesis.

Deadline: June 20, 2022


The Visualizing Central Asia Grant awards $500 to students to create short videos about the Central Asian region.

Deadline: Extended to September 16, 2022


Grants of up to $3,000 are available to conduct research in Armenian-related studies during the academic year or the summer.

Awards

The list below represents awards that Flagship students have frequently received.


The Excellence in Russian, East European and Central European Studies Award is offered to a graduating senior who has demonstrated dedication, knowledge and outstanding motivation in Slavic, East European and Eurasian studies.

Deadline: May


The American Council of Teachers of Russian Post-Secondary Russian Scholar Laureate Award provides national recognition for outstanding junior and senior university Russian-language students.

Nomination Period: January 1st – March 1st


The Library Prize for Undergraduate Research recognizes and honors excellence in undergraduate research at UCLA.

Deadline: Spring


In the Annual National Post-Secondary Russian Essay Contest, American student essays are judged by native speakers of Russian and receive Gold, Silver and Bronze certificates of accomplishment.

Contest is held in February
