| Student Life

Russian Flagship is more than a series of academic courses. The small class sizes within the department and the unique experience of studying abroad allow students to build close bonds with their peers. At a university of more than 30,000 students, it will become your campus home.

Community-oriented Events

Flagship hosts a variety of community-oriented events each quarter. These include casual events such as game nights, study nights and movie showings as well as more formal information sessions, lectures on relevant topics and conversations with Flagship alumni.

Recently, the Program has launched a “buddy” program to pair new students and returning students with similar majors or interests. The buddy program provides new students with a mentor figure to answer their questions about Flagship or life on campus in general and helps them become more involved in Flagship.

Cultural Engagement

There have also been events organized around aspects of Russian culture, such as trips to Russian markets or restaurants, museum exhibits and local Russian Orthodox churches.

Flagship Ambassadors take on a leadership role in the program by organizing events for students, contributing to our social media and newsletters, meeting with interested students and representing the program at UCLA events. If you are interested in becoming a Flagship Ambassador, please contact russianflagship@international.ucla.edu for more details.

Quarterly Celebrations

At the end of each quarter Flagship students participate in a celebration or performance sponsored by the Department of Slavic, East European and Eurasian Languages and Cultures. In the fall quarter, students perform different festive songs at the holiday party and in the winter, they recite poetry for poetry night. During the spring quarter the students act out traditional and contemporary fairy tales or plays they have written themselves for a multicultural performance night. These quarterly celebrations are well attended by students, faculty and friends and family who show up to support their students.

There is always delicious food and drinks!
