| Curriculum

The Flagship curriculum is designed to enable students of any major, even those entering UCLA with no prior experience studying Russian, to reach a professional level of language proficiency by graduation. To complement their formal UCLA coursework and advance their learning, all of our students receive individualized tutoring each quarter.

Program
Goals

In addition to “Superior” language proficiency in a language of global significance, our curriculum and extracurricular activities enable students to achieve advanced cultural skills and globally transferable intercultural competence.

Students who complete the full Flagship program are able to use their knowledge of Russian to interact with Russian-speaking colleagues in linguistically and culturally appropriate ways. They master the following competences, among others.

Speaking

  • Support opinions
  • Hypothesize
  • State and defend and/or criticize policy
  • Clarify and elaborate
  • Deliver briefings or extended reports
  • Lead a discussion or a meeting

Listening and Reading

  • Understand both concrete and abstract discourse
  • Understand both explicit and implicit information
  • Connect communicated information to culturally grounded subtexts
  • Distinguish between stylistic levels and understand their communicative significance
  • Recognize humor, irony, emotional overtones and other subtleties of language use

Writing

  • Write on a variety of topics, both concrete and abstract, with precision and detail
  • Engage in both informal and formal correspondence
  • Write summaries, reports and research papers, incorporate Russian-language sources

Course of Study

The course of study listed below is representative of most students' programs, but all Flagship students will meet with a counselor to develop an individual study plan that meets their needs and enables them to meet the requirements for their major while fulfilling the Flagship requirements.

In addition to coursework, students receive individualized tutoring starting in the second quarter of first-year Russian.

 

  • Russian 1-2-3:  First-year Russian

  • Russian 4-5-6: Second-year Russian or Russian 20:  Second-year Russian, summer intensive course; some funding available

  • Russian 101A-B-C: Third-year Russian

  • The following summer: Russian language study abroad; some funding available

  • Russian 102A-B-C: Topics in Advanced/Superior Russian

Highly Recommended: Russian 107A-B: Russian for Social and Cultural Studies; Russian 108: Russian for Business

 

 

  • Russian 100A-B-C: Literacy in Russian or

  • Russian 103A-B-C: Russian for Native and Near-Native Speakers*

  • Summer following Russian 100A-B-C or 103A-B-C: Russian language study abroad, some funding available

  • Russian 102A-B-C: Topics in Advanced/Superior Russian

Highly Recommended: Russian 107A-B: Russian for Social and Cultural Studies; Russian 108: Russian for Business

*Depending on your proficiency

Students completing the domestic portion of Flagship are eligible to apply for the capstone year in Almaty, Kazakhstan. 

The overseas component includes:

  • An eight week study abroad program (prerequisite to participation in the yearlong overseas Capstone Program)

  • Students completing the domestic portion of Flagship are eligible to apply for the Russian Overseas Flagship Capstone Program. This program is an academic year in Almaty, Kazakhstan and includes advanced language classes, direct enrollment in courses at the local university, tutoring, a professional internship and a homestay.
