On October 8, the Nazarbayev University Library and the Herman B. Wells Library at Indiana University co-hosted an online poetry event in honor of the 175th anniversary of the Kazakh poet Abai Qunanbaiuly (Kunanbaev). The event celebrated Abai's writing through readings and musical renditions of his work in Kazakh and in translation.
Among the participants were current UCLA Russian Flagship student Joseph Matveyenko, who read the poem "Sagattyn shyqyldagy emes ermek" / "Сагаттын шыкылдагы емес ермек" in the Kazak original, and James Nee'2020, who read Abai's poem « Журегiм, ойбай, сокпа ендi!», translated into Russian as « О сердце моё, замри, застынь! » by S. Tleubaev.
