On Tuesday, August 4, Flagship hosted Dante Matero, UCLA Class of 2015, to speak on his recently published article about contemporary Russian-American relations, as well as engage in a Q&A about his experience using Russian.

Link to his article, available both in English and in Russian:

"How Paul Whelan Fell Victim to Hostage Diplomacy"

The following is a list of tips Dante has to offer for Russian language learners:

Two chrome apps to help with language learning:

  • Language learning with Netflix

  • Language learning with Youtube

Find a musician you like! Here are my favorites (with links to my favorite songs on YouTube):

  • Луна (www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ssb2AMR-kEo)
  • Не твое дело (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rL90Ap8seKc)
  • Хадн Дадн (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGNiMutYBm4)
  • Земфира (конечно!!). Full concert: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jk0XkC1qDJI
  • Тати (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yad7yFb-JR4)

Podcasts

  • Rfe/rl -- Good resource for Russian language podcasts, and even English ones.
The classic Russian radio station that puts many of their programs into podcast form.
  • Blitz and Chipz -- Three friends that talk about movies, music, etc. (good for learning slang)
(Definitely the coolest "online samizdat" news website that also has great podcasts.)

YOUTUBE IS GREAT! My favorite makeup youtuber is Саша Гардей! or Андрей Петров. He's hilarious!
If you like politics, check out Навальный's YouTube channel.

Books

(Harry Potter) -- It's helpful to read something you're very familiar with!
I read a bilingual Bridget Jones's Diary a couple years ago and found it super helpful.
  • Пелевин, Сорокин, and Улицкая are my favorite contemporary authors. (Pelevin, Sorokin, and Ulitskaya--if you want to read them in translation, there's plenty of short stories available online).
