The last few years have seen a boom in Turkish movie production and Turkish films are enjoying wider international audiences than at any point in the Republic's history. Nuri Bilge Ceylan, one of the country's leading directors, continues to be an important reference for younger film makers and one of the best known directors abroad. In his film 2008 film Three Monkeys, Ceylan explores how repressed memories of Turkey's troubled past can be made observable on screen. The film was the first Turkish film to be nominated for an Academy Award.
Attached are two short readings that introduce the film historicize it in terms of Ceylan's oeuvre and Turkish cinema. A screening of the film will be followed by a short discussion based on the two readings.
