Course of Study

The course of study listed below is representative of most students' programs, but all Flagship students will meet with a counselor to develop an individual study plan that meets their needs and enables them to meet the requirements for their major while fulfilling the Flagship requirements.

In addition to coursework, students receive individualized tutoring starting in the second quarter of first-year Russian.

Course of Study for Beginners

Russian 1-2-3:  First-year Russian

Russian 4-5-6: Second-year Russian
or Russian 20:  Second-year Russian, summer intensive course; some funding available

Russian 101A-B-C: Third-year Russian
The following summer: Russian language study abroad; some funding available

Russian 102A-B-C: Topics in Advanced/Superior Russian
Highly Recommended: Russian 107A-B: Russian for Social and Cultural Studies; Russian 108: Russian for Business

Students completing the domestic portion of Flagship are eligible to apply for the capstone year in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

 

Course of study for students who grew up speaking Russian at home

Russian 100A-B-C: Literacy in Russian
or Russian 103A-B-C: Russian for Native and Near-Native Speakers*
Summer following Russian 100A-B-C or 103A-B-C: Russian language study abroad, some funding available

Russian 102A-B-C: Topics in Advanced/Superior Russian
Highly Recommended: Russian 107A-B: Russian for Social and Cultural Studies; Russian 108: Russian for Business

Students completing the domestic portion of Flagship are eligible to apply for the capstone year in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Overseas Component

The overseas component includes:

  1. An eight week study program abroad (prerequisite to participation in the yearlong overseas Russian Flagship Program)
  2. The academic year Overseas Russian Flagship Program abroad, which includes advanced language classes for Flagship students, direct enrollment in courses at the home university, tutoring, a professional based internship, and a homestay
    The Capstone year abroad is administered by American Councils for International Education.
