Our Data

The HELADA Repository is a large searchable database of language data that represent various languages, linguistic contexts, types, and modalities. The focus of the Repository is on heritage languages; however, the Repository also holds comparable data collected from second-language speakers and native speakers (or otherwise baseline speakers) of target languages represented in this Repository.

“A language qualifies as a heritage language if it is a language spoken at home or otherwise readily available to young children, and crucially this language is not a dominant language of the larger (national) society… [A]n individual qualifies as a heritage speaker if and only if he or she has some command of the heritage language acquired naturalistically …, although it is equally expected that such competence will differ from that of native monolinguals of comparable age”

The mission of the HELADA Repository is to collect and store heritage language data, to avail of these data for empirical investigations, and, no less importantly, to preserve these data for future generations of scholars.Language samples found in the Repository have been collected for various research projects; the diversity of data is a clear asset as it allows to test various hypothesis and conduct observations across speech modes, task parameters, data collection contexts and more.

The Repository has certain important advantages over simple sharing of individual data sets. First of all, the database contains a large amount of data; at the same time, a consistent and principled meta-tagging procedure allows for organized (or principled) storage and for quick and principled searching. Additionally, the Repository allows for easy access to and downloading of the language data, while upholding strictest rules for ethical sharing of data.

The data is available in the following formats

Written documents

typed up on a computer or written down by hand, in which case it may be accompanied by a digitized copy of the hand-written text

Audio and video recordings

may or may not be accompanied by transcript recordings

Transcript recordings

without the original audio- or video-sources
