This course is opened to students from all backgrounds. Participation is allowed in English, Spanish, or Portuguese. No previous knowledge of Portuguese or Brazilian culture is required.

Focusing on the visual cultural production of the African diaspora in Brazil, the course examines how the Brazilian nation constructs ideas around citizenship, its colonial past, its present, and future. The course covers a wide range of materials: from “bolsas de mandinga” (amulets used by enslaved people) to art installations, performance, painting, videos, art exhibitions, short stories, and films produced in the transition from the 20th to the 21st century.
