Dr. Ramírez-Pimienta specializes in Mexican and Border cultural and literary studies. His areas of teaching and research include Contemporary Latin American Literatures and Cultures, National, Transnational and Post-national Musical Identities, Migration and Popular Poetics.

His most recent book is on the origin and development of drug trafficking ballads. Cantar a los narcos: voces y versos del narcocorrido (Singing to the Traffickers: Voices and Verses of the Narcocorrido). Mexico: Editorial Planeta (Temas de hoy),  2011.
