Dr. Ryan Sayre
2014-2015 Postdoctoral Fellow

Ryan Sayre received his Ph.D. from Yale University in Socio-Cultural Anthropology.  His dissertation was entitled "Preparing for Preparedness: Security, Disaster, and 'Recursive Modernity' in Contemporary Japan." He will be teaching a course in anthropology called "Tokyo and the Cultural Aesthetics of City Life," an advanced writing-intensive course on the sensuous dimensions of urban life in Japan. Taking up a host of ethnographic, anthropological, philosophical, sartorial, literary, and artistic examples, students will work together to construct a class-based website consisting of carefully crafted weekly writings on Japanese urban everydayness.
