Carol Sorgenfrei, Professor Emerita of Theatre, Film and Television in the Department of Theatre specializes in Japanese Theatre, World and Comparative Theatre, Playwriting, and Directing. Her book publications include Theatre Histories: An Introduction (Routledge, 2006), the Second Edition was released in 2010 and the Third Edition in 2013; and Unspeakable Acts: The Avant-Garde Theatre of Terayama Shūji and Postwar Japan (University of Hawaii Press, 2005). She is currently working on a book titled Freaks, Fags, Foreigners, and Females: Outlaw Theater and Japanese History. She has also received specialized training in Beijing Opera, Nō, Kyōgen, Buyō and Kabuki.
