Established in 1991, the UCLA Terasaki Center has been a platform for research on Japan. Our distinguished faculty, students, postdoctoral fellows, visiting scholars, and the board of advisors have been contributing to the field of Japanese studies for over 20 years.

The Terasaki Center sponsors a vast array of events throughout the year. With its colloquium series, the Center brings academics from diverse fields to UCLA each year. Special workshops and annual conferences bring leading scholars to discuss topics relating to Japan.

Sarah Walsh

History

Sarah Walsh is a PhD Candidate in the Department of History at UCLA. She received her BA in Art History from Boston University (2005), and an MA in Japanese Studies with a concentration in History from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London (2006). Her current research is on the art world of Japan's 1980s, specifically the effects of economic prosperity on art criticism and museum practices, as well as artists' interactions with the broader social and political discourses of the postmodernist era. Focusing on the government initiative-cum-buzzword "bunka no jidai" (age of culture) she hopes to demonstrate how not only the material reality of the economic Bubble but also the intellectual underpinnings of prosperity-as-national-identity structured the ways in which artists, critics, museum professionals and philanthropists conceived of art in Japan, both its history and its role in the contemporary.
