Established in 1991, the UCLA Terasaki Center has been a platform for research on Japan. Our distinguished faculty, students, postdoctoral fellows, visiting scholars, and the board of advisors have been contributing to the field of Japanese studies for over 20 years.

The Terasaki Center sponsors a vast array of events throughout the year. With its colloquium series, the Center brings academics from diverse fields to UCLA each year. Special workshops and annual conferences bring leading scholars to discuss topics relating to Japan.

Mr. Herb Kawahara

Board Advisor

Herb Kawahara is a retired president of the Pacific Stock Exchange, a position that capped his 32-year career in the investment brokerage business. He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from UCLA in 1951, graduating summa cum laude, and served with the Army Counter Intelligence Corps during the Korean War. He was appointed chairman of the UCLA Foundation’s Investment Committee in 1999. Mr. Kawahara cites his UCLA education as an important factor in his rise to success, and has devoted much of his time and energy to his alma mater.
