HIMEYURI, a student-led production

Unpromising love in an unforgiving war. A story of youth, memory, impossible choices, and the cost of survival during the Battle of Okinawa.

Himeyuri is an original play directed and produced by Eve Mori (UCLA student) and written by Eve Mori and Callan Farris, telling the story of five teenagers living through the Battle of Okinawa. Moving between 1945 and the present day, the story explores memory, love, and the lasting impact of war across generations.

Centered on the often-overlooked history of mass civilian suicides in Okinawa, the play seeks to foster a greater awareness of Japanese history while honoring the legacy and lived experiences of war survivors. Through the lens of young people forced to make impossible choices, Himeyuri invites audiences to reflect on the human cost of war and the importance of preventing it.

This production is entirely student-led, brought to life by a team of UCLA and Los Angeles student artists across performance, design, and production. Together, they create a powerful and intimate theatrical experience rooted in passion, research, and storytelling - to tell a story rarely seen on stage.

Himeyuri aims to create space for cultural reflection and dialogue within both the UCLA community and the broader Los Angeles community - leaving audiences not only moved, but inspired to engage with history and imagine a more peaceful future.
