The San Diego Museum of Art presents "Highlights of a Major Gift of Japanese Mingei," an exhibition on view fromJune 9, 2003 - January 4, 2004.
The Museum's collection of Japanese and Korean works of art from the 17th to 20th century has been given an added dimension by a recent gift of over 175 objects from the collection of San Diego potter Isamu Kawaguchi. The gift includes ceramics, lacquers, textiles, rare wooden objects, and stencil prints. Highlights of this important gift have been installed near the entrance of The Living Line: Paintings, Prints and Drawings by Hokusai.
The heart of Kawaguchi's gift consists of dishes, cups, storage jars, vases, mixing platters, and door curtains inspired by the Mingei Movement. Originating in Japan, the Mingei Movement was both a philosophy of life and a practical direction for artists. Its goal was to keep crafts a part of Japanese domestic life in an age of increasing industrialization. The movement had a profound effect on the development of the arts in the 20th century, particularly ceramics, many fine examples of which can viewed in the current installation.
