This public forum will explore the path of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa and Eastern Europe.

Since the first report of the virus, more than 65 million persons have been infected with HIV, and more than 25 million have died of AIDS. Worldwide, more than 40% of new infections among adults are in young people 15 to 24 years of age. Today, AIDS is the leading cause of premature death among people 15 to 59 years of age. In the hardest-hit countries, the foundations of society, governance, and national security are eroding, stretching safety nets to the breaking point, with social and economic repercussions that will span generations.

Keynote

• Stephen Lewis, Former UN Special Envoy
  Stephen Lewis' work with the United Nations spans more than two decades. He was the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa. Mr. Lewis was also Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF and Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations. He is a Senior Advisor to the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University in New York. Mr. Lewis serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), and is the chair of the board of the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

Stephen Lewis is scheduled to present during the afternoon session, which begins at 12:45 PM (at the conclusion of lunch).  He will speak right after Debrework Zewdie of The World Bank.
