ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF ENGLISH, APPLIED LINGUISTICS

The Department of English at Washington State University invites applications for a new full-time, tenure-track position as an advanced Assistant Professor/beginning Associate Professor at the Pullman campus located in Pullman, Washington, starting date 16 August, 2007.

The usual teaching load is five courses per year (with release for significant administrative duties). New faculty are eligible for reduced teaching loads prior to tenure review to develop their research programs. A range of research and travel funding is available for faculty at all levels.

DUTIES: Teach a yearly graduate seminar in TES(O)L methods and theory; teach courses in the linguistics sequence, including phonetics, phonology, and language acquisition; develop courses and programs for graduate ESL students mostly in non-liberal arts fields; serve as part of faculty providing the TEFL certificate program and the linguistics minor sequence; participate in the administration of the linguistics program and take a leading role in the administration of the ESL program; conduct scholarly research leading to publication in areas of specialization.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Requirements include a Ph.D. in linguistics, applied linguistics, English linguistics, English language, or SLAT(E) in hand by 1 July 2007; at least one year of experience teaching ESL/EFL in a postsecondary setting; near-native competence in English; completion of coursework in TES(O)L/SLAT(E) and two areas of linguistics.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Preference will be given to applicants with at least one year of experience teaching ESL or EFL at the college level; at least one year experience teaching TES(O)L/TEFL/SLAT(E) at the college level; a research interest in second language acquisition, first language acquisition or phonetics/phonology as evidenced by publications or presentations; at least one year of experience teaching a range of introductory linguistics courses; literacy in at least one language other than English.

SALARY: The salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
