Religion has played a major part in Slavic history and its effects, both positive and negative, are still felt today. When Prince Vladimir chose to accept Byzantine Christianity, many of his subjects were not eager to accept a new religion. In fact, records show that many people remained pagan as late as the twelfth century. This article goes back to the nascent Kievan Rus to explore the transition from the Slavic pagan religion to Christianity and explores the various ways that Christianity was adapted to local pagan beliefs.
