The recent wave of violent raids, detentions, and extrajudicial killings taking place across Myanmar is part of a longstanding pattern of systematic violence perpetrated against political groups and social movements that challenge military control and dominance. Please join us for a teach-in on the history of violence and persecution directed at the National League for Democracy (NLD), the 88 Generation, and others who took part in the Burmese democracy movement. Two panelists, who are both daughters of political prisoners, will share their personal experiences of having grown up in a community of activists who belong to the 88 Generation and NLD. They will share their experiences of suffering and struggle alongside their revolutionary, activist fathers; but also describe the tremendous creativity, complexity, wholeness, and resiliency of the people and cultures of the movement. This teach-in will provide a broad overview of the history of the NLD, 88 Generation, and other political groups in the movement; as well as the many cycles of protest that took place between 1988 and the present day.
