UCLA Center for Southeast Asian Studies met with His Excellency Notonegoro, Prince of the Yogyakarta Sultanate, to discuss potential collaborations.

On July 11, 2024, UCLA Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) had the honor of meeting Kanjeng Pangeran Haryo Notonegoro (His Excellency Notonegoro), Prince of the Yogyakarta Sultanate, to discuss potential partnerships. In attendance was CSEAS Director Stephen Acabado (Anthropology), Nguyet Tong (CSEAS), Juliana Wijaya (Asian Languages and Cultures), and Jenjit Gasigitamrong (Asian Languages and Cultures), and Supeena Adler (Ethnomusicology). The focus of the discussion was expansion and collaboration opportunities, particularly through the UCLA Gamelan Program, spearheaded by Professor Adler in the UCLA School of Music.
 
During the meeting, His Excellency Notonegoro and CSEAS explored ways to deepen cultural ties and promote the heritage of the Yogyakarta Sultanate through music and academic exchange. The UCLA Gamelan program, known for its dedication to traditional Javanese music, is the ideal conduit for this partnership.
 
This collaboration promises to enhance the cultural and educational experiences of students and scholars, encouraging a greater appreciation and understanding of Southeast Asian arts and traditions. CSEAS looks forward to the limitless outcomes of this partnership and the continued engagement with the Yogyakarta Sultanate.
