The UCLA International Institute Title VI centers invite UCLA undergraduate, graduate, and professional school students to learn about FLAS fellowships, requirements, and the application process.

The U.S. Department of Education Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowship program supports training in modern foreign languages and related area studies during the summer and academic year.

FLAS fellowship applications will be accepted for the following areas and languages:

  • Quechua, Portuguese, Nahuatl, and Advanced Spanish (Latin America)
*Additional languages (Haitian Creole, Maya) may be eligible for summer study with prior approval from the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Chinese, Japanese, Korean (East Asia)
  • Indonesian, Filipino/Tagalog, Khmer, Thai and Vietnamese (Southeast Asia)

Fellowship Awards:

  • Academic Year Graduate: $15,000 stipend plus up to $18,000 towards tuition and fees
  • Academic Year Undergrad: up to $10,000 tuition and a $5,000 stipend
  • Summer Graduate/Undergraduate: up to $5,000 tuition and a $2,500 stipend. A travel grant of up to $1,000  may be available for some program areas

Eligibility:

Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. New and continuing graduate students in all disciplines may apply for academic year and summer awards. Students must be studying the target language at the intermediate or advanced level.

The fellowship requires that students take one language and one related area studies course for a letter grade each term during the academic year. Summer fellowships are for intensive language study and can be used for summer study abroad (at the intermediate or advanced level only).
