Faculty Grants and Graduate Student Fellowships in Support of Cross-cultural Interdisciplinary Studies in Anthropology, Sociology, Psychology, and Law

The Hiroshi Wagatsuma Memorial Fund will provide support for UCLA faculty and graduate student research activities that fall within Professor Wagatsuma's broad areas of interest. Professor Wagatsuma was an honored member of the UCLA Anthropology Department, who for many years served as an important bridge of mutual understanding between students and academics in Japan and in the United States. He possessed a remarkable capacity to explain the two cultures and mindsets to each other and pursued his cross-cultural studies in anthropology, psychology, and law until his death in 1985.

The fund will make grants in the following categories:

1. One or two fellowships will be awarded to graduate students preparing a dissertation with a substantial cross-cultural dimension, preferably one involving Japan or other Asian country and North American comparison.

2. A grant in support of research, a conference, workshop, or publication will be made to a UCLA faculty member for use in a collaborative research project with a Japanese or other Asian scholar.

These grants will be made on the basis of accrued interest. Usually the awards are in the range of $3,000-5,000 each. Detailed budgetary information will be called for with each application. The grants may not be used for salary supplements for UCLA faculty or visiting Japanese scholars.

Applications for grants and fellowships should be submitted by March 1, 2006. Awards will be announced by June 30, 2006.

The applications are in Adobe Acrobat format (PDF files). If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader, please download it as a plug-in for your WWW browser.

You can also contact the Institute by phone and an application can be mailed to you. Completed applications should be submitted to:
