Procedure for FLAS fellowship applicants to obtain a language evaluation from UCLA Asian Languages and Cultures instructors (East Asian and Southeast Asian languages)
Applicants for the FLAS fellowship who wish to obtain a language evaluation for East Asian languages (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) or Southeast Asian Languages (Indonesian, Filipino/Tagalog, Thai, Vietnamese) from instructors in the UCLA Department of Asian Languages and Cultures (ALC)* should follow the steps below:
- E-mail the following information to ALC’s Chair of Language Committee, Dr. Gyanam Mahajan (mahajan@humnet.ucla.edu) and SAO, Tiffany Chen (tchen@humnet.ucla.edu):
- Name
- UID
- Language
- Are you currently enrolled in a language course, if so which course and who is your instructor?
- What language level are you applying for (i.e. intermediate or advanced)?
- ALC will assign a language instructor to evaluate the applicant. The applicant is responsible for scheduling an evaluation time with the assigned instructor. This can only be done after the FLAS application has been submitted.
- The applicant should obtain an evaluation form from the ALC front office (290 Royce Hall) and submit it to the instructor at the time of the evaluation.
* Note: FLAS applicants are not required to obtain an evaluation from a UCLA ALC instructor. For example, applicants who are prospective UCLA graduate students may wish to obtain an evaluation from a language instructor at their current university.
