Shinkendo is a Japanese sword art created by Kaiso Toshishiro Obata, current headmaster of the Shinkendo Honbu Dojo in downtown Los Angeles. Training involves use of both wooden swords (bokken) and live blades (shinken) in solo forms, partner practice, and target cutting (tameshigiri). Dr. Joe Pierre is a UCLA professor who has been studying Shinkendo since 2005. He is a member of the International Shinkendo Federation, holds an instructor's rank in the art, and is interested in forming a a Shinkendo study group and  sports club at UCLA.
