Arvin Chen is one of the most acclaimed filmmakers working in Taiwan today. This conversation will span his formative years studying architecture and film and his apprenticeship with Edward Yang before exploring his major films, including Au Revoir Taipei, Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow, and the forthcoming Loveboat, Taipei. We will also discuss the current state of the Taiwan film industry an how it has transformed over the past 20 years.
Arvin Chen is a Taiwanese-American writer and director based in Taipei and Los Angeles. He has an MFA in film production from USC’s School of Cinematic Arts. His thesis film “Mei” won the Short Film Silver Bear at the 57th Berlin International Film Festival.
Arvin’s first feature film, “Au Revoir Taipei” was executive produced by Wim Wenders and had its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the NETPAC Award for Best Asian Film. His second feature “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?” again premiered in Berlin and screened in the World Cinema Competition at Tribeca.
He is currently in post-production on his third Taiwanese film “Mama Boy.” He has also just recently finished directing a USA/Taiwan co-production film called “Loveboat, Taipei” based on the New York Times best-selling YA novel.
