African Languages 56ABC: Elementary Amharic (12 units)
Amharic is one of the major languages of Ethiopia. It is spoken by more than 17 million people, about one third of Ethiopia's population. It is the language of the dominant population group in Highland Ethiopia since at least the late 13th century and remains the official language of Ethiopia today. As the national language, Amharic (or Amarinya as it is called in the language itself) is spoken in every province, having originated in the Amhara region. Amharic is one of the rare languages in Africa with its own writing system, a semi-syllabic system called “fidel.” The eight-week Amharic intensive course will focus on reading Amharic script and texts as well as mastering the basic grammatical structures and using them in both written and spoken communication. The course covers a full first year course in the language. (12 units)
The Intensive Summer Amharic Program at UCLA offers the equivalent of one year of instruction in only eight weeks.
All UCLA students can enroll in this course using URSA.
All other students can enroll in this course here.
Language Intensives in L.A. is organized by the UCLA Center for World Languages and UCLA Summer Sessions with support from the UC Consortium for Language Learning and Teaching, the UCLA African Studies Center, UCLA Departments of Near Eastern Languages & Cultures, Linguistics, Slavic Languages, and Spanish & Portuguese.
