The UCLA Asia Pacific Center (APC) invites applications for a one-year postdoctoral fellowship in Taiwan studies with a social science or policy focus. The fellowship aims to support the work of exceptional scholars in the social sciences (political science, economics, sociology, and international relations) whose presence at UCLA would strengthen the study of Taiwan in a global context. The term of appointment is September 1, 2023 to August 31, 2024. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to:

  • Conduct original research in Taiwanese studies from multidisciplinary perspectives
  • Organize and coordinate the APC Taiwan in the World lecture series while in residence
  • Participate in APC events and present one public lecture per year
  • Contribute to curriculum development on Taiwan studies by teaching or co-teaching one course per year related to their area of research, which may take the form of an undergraduate class on Taiwan with a social science or international relations focus or a graduate proseminar in conjunction with the lecture series

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must have a recent PhD degree or equivalent from an accredited university conferred by start of fellowship
  • Applicants must demonstrate strong research, organizational and communication skills
  • Citizens from any country are eligible for this fellowship
  • Academics who are permanently employed in full-time, tenure-track positions are not eligible to apply

Application Guidelines:

Applications should be submitted through the APC online application form. All application materials must be received by June 15, 2023. Materials required to complete the electronic application include:

  • A cover letter that includes a research statement (e.g., doctoral dissertation research and future research), teaching and/or administrative experience, and planned activities at UCLA
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Proposed research project title and description (up to 1,500 words)
  • An article-length writing sample in English (e.g., a published journal article/book chapter, or a dissertation chapter)
  • Three letters of recommendation

This is a 12-month paid position with possibility of extension for an additional two years. The salary range is $60,000 to $71,952, depending on experience, and health coverage is included. Office space, and access to a computer, the UC library system, and other facilities available to members of the UCLA community will also be provided.
