Majors may choose ONE option during senior year to fulfill the senior capstone requirement

1. One Quarter of Independent Research (Glbl St 199)

Independent research on a topic of your choice with assistance from a faculty mentor. Potential faculty can be only Professors, Associate/Assistant Professors, or Emeritus. Lecturers, adjunct, and visiting instructors are not allowed. Check with our office. Commitment: 6-8 hours per week.

NEW SUMMER COURSE: Glbl St 188A: Social Science Research Methods and Analysis, can also be used for this requirement. This course does not require any of the steps below. Students can simply enroll in this course.

Step 2: Advisor Search

  • Search for a Faculty Advisor  (Adjunct Professors are not allowed. Check instructor's title HERE), preferably faculty you've had classes with before. If interested in a world region, search for faculty on the Intl Institute Centers by region of expertise.
  • Contact faculty with a brief summary of your research topic and request. 

Step 3: Enroll In Glbl St199 (no later than Week 1)

  • Once Faculty advisor has agreed to assist you, ask them to submit Faculty Form by Wed of week 1 of term of enrollment
  • To be enrolled, submit signed contract by email (idps@international.ucla.edu) by Wed of week 1 of term of enrollment. Contract must include a short paragraph with your research topic/question and explains what you are trying to answer.

Glbl St 199 Assignments

Wk 1 Enroll in Glbl St Capstone Course Website (sample papers, FAQ's and more)
Wk 1&2 Attend two Undergraduate Research Center Research Workshops by week 2 of term  of enrollment
Wk 2 Schedule bi-weekly meeting with your advisor to receive periodic feedback on your paper
Wk 2-10 Spend 10-12 hrs/wk completing assigned readings, writing  and meeting with advisor (this is a 4-unit course)
Wk 10 Submit 10-15 final paper and proof of attendance to workshops to GS advising office to receive credit for capstone. Must submit final paper to faculty advisor to receive grade.
 

2. One Quarter of Internship Experience

Students find their own internship OR participate in a UCLA-sponsored program listed below AND enroll in I A STD 195CE to receive credit.

International students should consult the Dashew Center prior to beginning their internship research process*

 Eligibility
  • Senior standing (135 units or more) and complete at least one core course (Glbl St 102, 103, or 104).
  • Internships must relate to globalization and deal with issues that involve crossing international borders.
  • Internship must be a min of 80 hours and 8 weeks during a quarter. On campus internships are not eligible. See additional eligibility HERE

Internship Search

Search for internships (process can take at least 5-7 months). Some federal internships require applications 1 year prior.

195 CE Enrollment

  • PETITION internship as early as during interview process. Petition Form takes two weeks processing.
  • Enroll in I A STD 195CE course by following these STEPS once your internship is secured and approved.

Students must submit a petition form to check internship eligibility prior to starting their internships and enroll in an internship course (I A STD 195CE or equivalent) while participating in these programs.
