Patricia Arroyo Calderón joined the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at UCLA after completing her Ph.D. in Latin American Literatures and Cultures at The Ohio State University (2015). Prior to starting her doctoral studies in the United States, she received a B.A. in History at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain, 2000), where she also obtained M.As in Latin American Studies, Translation, and Contemporary History.

She specializes in Central American history, literature, and visual culture, with a focus in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Her main research interests include the role of cultural production in the formation of social imaginaries and structures of inequality, as well as in contributing to the pervasiveness of economic, social, and political patterns of exclusion. Patricia has published books, book chapters and journal articles addressing a variety of topics, such as Central American women writers and intellectuals, Latin American political cultures, and Spanish cultural studies, among others. She has also taught courses and seminars on Latin American literature, film, and history at The Ohio State University, Universidad San Carlos de Guatemala (Guatemala), and Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain).

She is currently working on a book-length project that analyzes the politics of domestic economy manuals, costumbrista sketches of manners, and sentimental literature in the articulation of ethnic, class, and gender difference in Central America. Additionally, Patricia is working on shorter-length manuscripts on ethnographic cinema, women’s literature, and on the representation of domestic work in contemporary Latin American film.
