The landscape of children’s literature in Latin America is as vast as the communities that define its geography. The diversity of authors, illustrators, themes, genres, and publishers opens up all kinds of possibilities for readers in grades K-12 in the United States. This conversation will explore key definitions for understanding this landscape. It will also provide an overview of resources available to teachers and offer some tips for use in the classroom.
Speaker: Gina Rodríguez has worked in the publishing industry in Mexico and the US for 17+ years, serving as copyeditor, consultant, and Managing Editor for Penguin Random House/Vintage Español (YA books), Santillana, Castillo, and SM. As LA librería’s Acquisitions and Collections Development Specialist, she managed the relations with 45+ publishing houses from all over Latin America. She also coordinated the first catalog of the company, 262 Children’s Books to Read in Spanish. Publishing Workshop Fellow of the Los Angeles Review of Books/University of Southern California 2019, she has attended the USSBY Regional Conference organized by the United States Board on Books for Young People (2019), the Guadalajara International Book Fair, and Feria del Libro Infantil y Juvenil in Mexico City in numerous occasions.
