Terry and Suzan Kramer Global Leadership Scholars

The UCLA International Institute is pleased to announce the new Terry and Suzan Kramer Global Leadership Scholars program.

This program is designed to support highly motivated students who aspire to become leaders in international business or non-profit work and wish to better understand our globalized world.  Up to ten $2,000 scholarships will be awarded annually to students who have demonstrated leadership ability through past activities and who are studying abroad for the first time. UCLA students from any academic background are invited to apply.

Application Criteria

  • Applicants must be attending UCLA Travel Study or UCEAP for at least one academic term (i.e. summer, quarter, semester or year abroad);
  • Applicants should not have previously studied abroad nor have significant foreign travel experience;
  • Applicants must have maintained a minimum 3.25 GPA at the time of application;
  • Applicants should be U.S. residents.
  • Applicants must be financial aid recipients at UCLA.

Please note that these scholarships will be awarded through a competitive application process. Preference will be given to applicants for whom the experience of studying abroad will have the greatest potential impact academically, personally, and for their future professional careers.

Application Deadlines

January 28, 2011 - for students attending programs beginning in summer or fall 2011

October 7, 2011 - for students attending programs beginning in winter or spring 2012

  • Download and complete the scholarship application;
  • Attach a copy of your most current UCLA transcript and Financial Aid Notification letter;

Applications will be reviewed by the Kramer Global Leadership Scholars faculty committee.  Applicants will be notified of decisions by March 1, 2011 for summer and fall 2011 applicants and November 4, 2011 for winter and spring 2012 applicants.

Terry and Suzan Kramer

With a strong belief in the value of study abroad to shape global leaders, Terry and Suzan Kramer have made these scholarships possible. For more information about Terry and Suzan, please see their bios below.

Terry Kramer

Terry's career spans 20+ years in global telecommunications-leading both large and high risk emerging international telecommunications companies. His range of corporate roles has included CEO/President, corporate strategy, business development, human capital, corporate governance, and Board member/advisor. Eighteen of his 20+ years were spent working in a variety of roles with Vodafone/AirTouch/PacTel. During this time, Terry and his family moved 8 times including living 6 years abroad, in both London and The Hague, Netherlands.

Early in his career, Terry led various parts of the domestic US cellular and paging businesses for Vodafone/AirTouch/PacTel.  Later he assumed responsibility for European Business Development for Vodafone/AirTouch/PacTel  based in The Hague, overseeing select international wireless investments. After a period back in the U.S., he moved to London as Chief of Staff to Vodafone's Group CEO, and became Group HR Director and then Group Strategy and Business Improvement Director. Terry represented Vodafone on the Board of GSMA, the global, mobile industry association, and served as the Chair of The GSMA Strategy Committee.

In 2009, Terry returned to the San Francisco Bay Area to serve as Regional President, Vodafone Americas, responsible for Vodafone’s 45% ownership interest in Verizon Wireless. Terry also served on the Board of Verizon Wireless and was Chairman of Vodafone Ventures, investing in new mobile communications ventures.

Prior to joining Vodafone, Terry was CEO of Q Comm International, a publicly traded provider of transaction processing services for the telecommunications industry. He began his career in marketing at the Harris Corporation and was an Associate with Booz Allen & Hamilton, a management consulting firm.  Terry holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BA in Economics from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Terry and his wife Suzan have two children and currently reside in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Suzan Kramer

Suzan, a Tatar by nationality, was true to her nomadic ancestry. Born in Kobe, Japan, but given citizenship by the Turks, her family moved to Ankara when she was a child. The importance of education brought Suzan's family to the United States, in particular to the San Francisco Bay Area. After graduating college and completing her Master's degree, Suzan worked at KPMG and DeloitteTouche in Paris for three years. Upon returning to the U.S., Suzan continued working in international tax at Tokyo Disneyland and EuroDisneyland. She speaks 5 languages, and enjoys cooking and travel. Suzan currently spends time with Terry and her two children and in fund raising for The Children's Support League and Larkin Street Youth Services, both in the San Francisco Bay Area.
