Performance - Pagkamulat: A Musical Awakening

Los Angeles Theatre Center (LATC)
514 S. Spring Street
Los Angeles, CA 90013

The Rondalla Club of Los Angeles and Kayamanan Ng Lahi Philippine Folk Arts invite Philippine music and dance enthusiasts to "Pagkamulat: A Musical Awakening," highlighting the diversity and depth of Philippine music and featuring compositions by renowned Philippine composers and maestros, Nitoy Gonzales and Felipe De Leon.

Philippine music has connections with many different cultures across the globe: from the xylophone-like metal gamelan of Southeast Asia, to the stringed mandolin of Europe; from the flat gongs of China, to the castanets of Spain. Over time, Filipinos modified these and other foreign musical instruments to better suit indigenous materials and preferences. Today, music of the Philippines is a true blending of Western and Eastern influences – a reflection of the Filipino's rich and diverse cultural heritage.

“Pagkamulat” is the inspiration of RCLA directors Leonilo “Boy" Angos and Tagumpay De Leon.  Angos is a former musical coordinator of Bayanihan Philippine Dance Company and is the son of Nitoy Gonzales, the first rondalla maestro and composer of Bayanihan. De Leon is the son of the late Philippine composer and national artist in music, Felipe Padilla de Leon. These second generation artists envisioned a musically focused Philippine concert, providing an aural perspective into the Filipino soul and Filipino-American experience. Because music and dance go hand in hand, RCLA teamed up with Joel Jacinto and Barbara Ele, directors of Kayamanan Ng Lahi, to provide dance accompaniment, visually framing the music with specially adapted choreography and costumes.
