BORDER CAFE (CAFE TRANSIT)
(Iran/France, 2005) Directed by Kambozia Partovi
A winner at last year's Fajr Film Festival, Kambozia Partovi's engaging and well-crafted film is a portrait of a young widow who takes over her husband's run-down roadside cafe on the Iranian/Turkish border. With two young children to support, the soft-spoken but strong-willed Reyhan sets about fixing the place up, and soon the small cafe and Reyhan's excellent cooking attracts a bevy of loyal customers (including an amorous Greek trucker). Meanwhile, Reyhan's meddling brother-in-law Nasser desires her for himself and will stop at nothing to shut the place down.
