Pratham presents a charity concert featuring Indian singing sensation, Shreya Ghoshal.

For the first time in the United States, Indian born and raised singing sensation Shreya Ghoshal of “Devdas- Dola Re” fame will perform at a charity concert organized by Pratham, a non-profit that helps to educate underprivileged children in India. Shreya is the winner of 8 prestigious awards, all received before she even turned 18 years old, including India's Best New Talent of the Year in 2003.

She has been singing since the age of four and has acquired great fame in a short amount of time for popular films such as "Devdas", in which she sang the hit song "Bairi Piya" for which she received the 2003 National award. She also has a string of other very prestigious awards including the 2003 Zee-Cine Award for the song "Dola Re Dola" from the same film, IIFA Award as well as the 2003 Filmfare Award for the song "Jadu Hai Nasha Hai" from the film “Jism”. Other films to her credit are the Tamil film "Virumandi" directed by and starring Kamal Hassan, “Munna Bhai MBBS”, “Main Hoon Na”, “Tumsa Nahin Dekha”, “Tera Mera Pyar” amongst many others, Additionally she will also pay tribute to the Bollywood music legends of yesteryears.

Shreya, who hails from a highly academic family, with her father serving as a nuclear engineer and her mother a post-graduate in literature, agrees that without education, a child cannot go very far. This is her contribution to help Pratham, raise funds to educate children in India who have no access to primary education.

Pratham is a community-based grass roots movement to promote literacy amongst the most underprivileged children in India. Initiated by UNICEF in 1994 and starting with 2000 children in Mumbai, Pratham now has 30 projects in 10 states across India. “Without education a person can't deal with life”, said Pratham ambassador, Waheeda Rehman.  The Pratham initiative with its vision of “Every Child In School, and Learning Well” moves forward. Pratham has provided a ray of hope for 1 million children, with programs designed to meet the needs of the children it serves. The cost of supporting a child is only $10/ per year. Pratham is able to invest almost 90 percent of a dollar into its projects.

Pratham's efforts have improved child literacy in India over the past ten years and can only continue to do so with the generosity and support of artists like Shreya Ghoshal and her patrons who come out to listen to her melodious music. So enjoy the music of the celebrated singer and indulge your philanthropic spirit.
