French Teachers' Project
The unit explores the effects of war and the role of art as mediator between contending individuals and cultures and as a medium to respond to the historical, cultural, psychological, and emotional complexities of war.
The project has the following goals:
-
To develop students’ understanding of the moral, social, cultural, and psychological impact of war
-
To enhance students’ critical thinking skills (observation, analysis, interpretation, inference, evaluation, explanation, and meta-cognition)
-
To sharpen students’ appreciation of the power of art (particularly poetry) to unite adversaries
The project uses the following authentic materials:
-
Le Rossignol de Kabylie (1959), written by the Algerian-French author Emmanuel Roblès. The story is set in a village in Algeria during the French-Algerian war.
-
Le Rossignol de Kabylie (1962), a short film directed by Georges Régnier, based on the short story by Emmanuel Roblès.
-
Le Dormeur du val, written by Arthur Rimbaud shortly after the beginning of the Franco-Prussian war (1870)
-
Le Télégramme (2003), a short film whose action takes place in a small French town during World War II. The short film explores the effects of the war on the postman and two women awaiting news from their soldier sons.
