The Republic of Korea, even though its embracing of foreign culture was a little bit late compared to neighboring countries, quickly adapts to new environment. Just like this, the Republic of Korea was able to achieve a world renowned economic growth and was able to join the group of advanced countries by hosting various international events. However, due to choosing policies which only focused on economy growth, foreign cultures were only accepted if they had economic values, and inequality against the so-called LGBT was caused as the country was not able to properly justify the human rights which are the core value. Despite the endeavors of ministries and schools on awareness of LGBT through policies and educations as the 21st century arrived, there is still a long way to go for the Republic of Korea. In his talk, Mr. Jung-Yong Jang will review the change in social awareness of the LGBT community in Korea to show we are living in the days when LGBT topics are still taboos in society. Furthermore, by comparing it with other countries, it is hoped that we can seek the direction for improvement in human rights of sexual minority for the Republic of Korea.
