John Wooden Center - Blue Room
Silat is a collective term for a variety of martial arts found in Southeast Asia. This class will focus on the specific style of Buka Lingkaran (SBL) that is rooted in West Sumatra (Indonesia). This particular style includes techniques focusing on a close quarter fighting style thatt utilizes a barrage of strikes to confuse the attacker by over stimulating the central nervous system. Weapons are often incorporated into Silat training and can be seen showcased through a performative manner of training called Kembangan, these combative movements are often hidden in dance form due to the restrictions placed on combative training from invading armies. Silat Buka Lingkaran is practiced by the Minangkabau people and is a rich part of their culture and heritage, in fact Silat was recognized as a piece of intangible cultural heritage by the United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in December of 2019. Students will learn ground postures & movement, footwork, blocks and strikes as part of conditioning the body for both ground and stand-up fighting and they will experience the nature of ‘play’ through the Kembangan.
