This workshop provides basic skills and knowledge related to Naginata – a Japanese martial art. Students will use a Naginata (pole arm) for offensive and defensive tactics while incorporating precision techniques.
Japanese terminology will orient students to the equipment and instructional cues for on guard positioning, footwork, and target areas. The course is taught according to traditional Japanese teaching methods with emphasis on etiquette, mental focus, self-discipline, and self-confidence. Culture, philosophy, and historical concepts with Naginata will also be discussed.
Shannon began her training in Naginata with a community college credit PE course in Naginata taught by Helen Nakano at El Camino College. Since then, she has been training Naginata as a member of USNF for 11 years. Shannon is currently the rank of 4 Dan (2019) and holds an INF level Shinpan certification (2019). She has earned several USNF Taikai titles in Engi Kyogi, Zen Nihon Kata, and both Individual and Team Shiai. Shannon has represented Team USA at two World Naginata Championships and earned 2 medals. A Silver in Shiai (2015) and Bronze for Zen Nihon Kata (2019). She is also organized and choreographed 2 Rhythm Naginata pieces that have been performed at the World Naginata Championships (2015 and 2019). Shannon is currently a member of the National team and placed 2nd at the recent USNF National Team Tryouts in Shiai and 1st in Zen Nihon Kata. Outside of Naginata, Shannon is the Head Coach and Director of Athletics for The RISE Gym. The RISE gym is an athletic facility home to more than 1000 young athletes that specializes in teaching gymnastics, cheer, and ninja fitness. Shannon has over 16 years of experience in teaching movement and has worked with athletes of all ages ranging from 18 months to adults well over their 50s. As Director of Athletics, Shannon has extensive experience in administrative duties from organizational tasks to long term visionary goals. She strongly believes in maintaining the classic and historical elegance of the sport of gymnastics while also encouraging the use of new research in movement mechanics, mental and physical resilience, anti-bullying, and injury prevention. Shannon hopes to one day bring some of these values to USNF to help foster an environment where the traditional strength and beauty of Naginata are preserved by nurturing practitioners with healthy and mobile bodies.
