She holds a BA in English and an MA in British Cultural Studies from the Babeş-Bolyai University in Cluj, in her native Romania, an MA in Nationalism Studies from the Central European University in Budapest, Hungary, and a PhD in Sociology from UCLA. Her areas of expertise are ethnicity and nationalism, and conversation analysis; her research interests focus on everyday ethnicity in Eastern Europe. She is co-author (with Rogers Brubaker, Margit Feischmidt, and Jon Fox) of
Nationalist Politics and Everyday Ethnicity in a Transylvanian Town (Princeton UP, 2006).
