In 1993 he assumed the directorship of the Center, known then as the Center for Russian and East European Studies, and undertook the task of its reorganization. The transformation of Europe and the opening of a new chapter in international relations have created a new task for American research and education. The most immediate step taken by Berend was to begin the reorientation of the Center's research and teaching mission toward a pan-European perspective.
Professor Berend is a specialist in the social and economic history of 19th-20th century Europe, with a great interest in modern Central and Eastern Europe. He received his Ph.D.in History from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and his Doctorate in Economics from the Budapest University of Economics. He has been awarded a number of honorary degrees by British, American, and Hungarian Universities, is a member of the British and Hungarian Academies of Sciences, and is the former head of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
