Ten scholarships are awarded for a stay of one year in Germany for professional development, study, or research. Monthly stipends range from $2,546 to $4,456. Special allowances are available for accompanying family members, travel expenses and German language instruction. All academic levels. Must be a U.S. citizen. Five German Studies Research Grants are offered to current undergraduate and graduate students in the humanities or social sciences who are nominated by their department/program chair. The grant may be used for short-term research (one to two months) in either North America or Germany. The program is designed to encourage research and promote the study of cultural, political, historical, economic, and social aspects of modern and contemporary German affairs from an inter- and multidisciplinary perspective. Awards of $1,500 to $2,500. Must be a U.S. citizen. Must have completed two years of college level German language studies and be younger than 32 at the start of the grant period.

DAAD - GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP FOR STUDY/RESEARCH IN GERMANY
Study Scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors and graduate students of all disciplines to provide the opportunity to study in Germany, or complete a postgraduate or Master's degree course and obtain a degree from a German higher education institution. Research Grants are awarded primarily to highly qualified PhD candidates and post-doc researchers for research or a course of study and training at universities or other institutes in Germany. Monthly stipend of approximately $600. In addition, DAAD will pay for health insurance and travel costs. Applicants should be US or Canadian citizens. Foreign nationals should contact DAAD New York before applying to determine their eligibility status. Graduate students should be enrolled full-time, PhD candidates should have all but the dissertation completed, and post-doctoral applicants must have completed their PhD no more than two years prior to applying. Applications should be submitted to Jerry Kong 2 weeks before the actual deadline.

GERMAN STUDIES ASSOCIATION - BERLIN PROGRAM FOR ADVANCED GERMAN AND EUROPEAN STUDIES
Up to twelve 10 12 month dissertation and postdoctoral fellowships to encourage comparative and interdisciplinary study of economic, political, and social aspects of modern and contemporary German and European affairs. Stipends are EUR 1100 per month for fellows working on dissertation and EUR 1400 per month for fellows working on postdoctoral research. In addition, fellows receive EUR 130 per month for each accompanying child and EUR 130 per month for spouse. Fellowships for short-term (two to three months) predissertation research in Europe during summer/fall 2008 for graduate students working on modern European topics and enrolled at any UC campus. Fellowships amount to $3000 each. The Center is unable to support pre-dissertation projects that are purely literary, philosophical, or theoretical in character. It also cannot support projects in early modern history outside the Central European field or those that deal exclusively with Russian history. Fellows can pursue the study of languages, cultures, and regions of the world outside of Western Europe, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. Up to $30,000, varies by program. Open only to U.S. citizens. The NSEP service requirement stipulates that an award recipient work in the federal government in a position with national security responsibilities. The Departments of Defense, Homeland Security, State, or any element of the Intelligence Community are priority agencies. If an award recipient demonstrates to NSEP that no appropriate position is available in one of these agencies after making a full and good faith effort in accordance with conditions established by NSEP, the award recipient must seek a position with national security responsibilities in any federal department or agency. Approval of service outside of a priority agency is contingent upon satisfactory demonstration of a full and good faith effort in accordance with conditions established by NSEP.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE AND AREA STUDIES PROGRAM (FLAS) FELLOWSHIP
FLAS assists individuals who are undergoing advanced training in modern foreign languages and related area studies. Applicants may apply for an academic year fellowship and/or a summer fellowship. Academic Year fellowship: up to $15,000 stipend, in some cases registration fees and tuition. Summer Fellowship: up to $2,500 stipend plus fees. Must be U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Students must take language and area studies courses for a letter grade during the academic year. Currently approved languages include, for the Middle East: Arabic, Armenian, Hebrew, Persian and Turkish. Since the purpose of the program is to enrich the nations pool of area and international specialists, applicants must be planning to use their training to teach, to serve in government or international agencies or to engage in other work that advances American understanding of other countries. Fellowship recipients must be engaged in full-time study for the duration of their awards and must submit reports on the courses they pursue and the progress they make. Required information includes a statement of purpose outlining ones research and language study plans, letters of recommendation, transcripts and endorsement from ones home department.

INDIANA UNIVERSITY INTENSIVE DUTCH LANGUAGE SUMMER STUDY FELLOWSHIPS
Indiana University's European Union Study Center of Excellence is offering Euro 2000 graduate fellowships for summer study of Dutch at Indiana University's Summer Dutch Institute. Graduate students with an interest in public policy or those needing language training before embarking upon a professional internship in the EU are eligible. Applicants should state the relevance of their language study in the application. Graduates in other disciplines such as history or popular culture may apply a broad definition of policy studies, but need to explain convincingly how their interests are relevant to EU policy as a whole or to policy debates and research.

UC Berkeley, UC San Diego & UC System - Entering Graduate Fellowships in Modern European Studies
The Berkeley Center for German and European Studies announces the availability of fellowships for outstanding entering graduate students who demonstrate an interest in modern European studies. Fellowships in the amount of $10,000 ($5,000 each semester). The Center will also provide a matching grant of $5,000 for a third semester, provided that the nominating department continues the tuition and fee waiver support and agrees to provide an additional $5,000 to the student. The sponsoring unit must agree to provide tuition and fee waivers for students who are selected. The departments contribution can come in the form of a GSI or GSR appointment. The students graduate advisor is required to write a brief narrative report on their progress each semester. Nominations should be submitted by the sponsoring department or professional school. All campuses other than UC Berkeley and UC San Diego must route the nominations through their Contracts and Grants office. Nominations should include the students complete application filetranscripts, GRE scores, statement of purpose, letters of referenceand a letter of nomination from the department.
