The Turath Ensemble, directed by Sami Asmar

Culminating the one-day conference honoring “The Legacy of Mahmoud Darwish,” the Turath Ensemble will present a concert of traditional music from the Arab world. The ensemble is directed by accomplished musician Sami Asmar, and brings together numerous Middle Eastern and European instruments such as qanun (plucked zither), ‘ud (plucked lute), riqq (tambourine), nay (reed flute), tablah (hand drum), cello, and bass. As a tribute to the artistic legacy of Darwish, the concert will feature recitations of his poetry, read by guest Sami Maalouf. The program will also include songs by the celebrated Lebanese composer Marcel Khalifé (b. 1950), as well as music popularized by Egyptian vocalist Sayyid Darwish (1892-1923).
