Menahem Ben-Sasson is a world-renowned scholar researching the social and intellectual history of Medieval Jewry in Muslim lands from the 7th to the 14th centuries. Professor Ben-Sasson co-edited Fortifications and the Synagogue: The Fortress of Babylon and the Ben Ezra Synagogue, Cairo (University of Chicago Press, 2001). His recent publications include, among others, Maimonides in Egypt: The First Stage (1992), The Jews of Sicily, 825-1068: Documents and Sources (1991), and A Family at a Time of Transition: A Study of the Encounter between Halakha and History in North Africa with New Evidence on Dunash ben Tamim (1991).
