The 2024 Giorgio Levi Della Vida Award presentation and conference will be held Thursday, May 16–Friday, May 17, 2024 at UCLA. The award will be jointly presented to Michael Cook, Class of 1943 University Professor of Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University, and Hossein Modarressi, Bayard Dodge Professor of Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University, in recognition of their decades-long collaboration and their enormous contributions to the fields of Near Eastern and Islamic Studies.

The conference will explore a range of topics related to the early history and development of Arabic, Arab identity, and early scriptural and legal discourses around language and semantics. The conference is part of a tradition established by CNES first director, Gustave E. von Grunebaum, to encourage research in the field of Islamic studies and to honor outstanding scholars in the field, beginning with the scholar for whom the award is named.
