In celebration of the newly-forming Department of European Languages & Transcultural Studies (ELTS), the graduate students of the Departments of French, Italian, German, and Scandinavian are organizing the 1st Annual UCLA ELTS Graduate Student Conference. Our event, titled “Porosity & Reciprocity,” will be held on October 24-25, 2019 and explores issues of cultural borders and exchange.

In recent years, scholars have underscored how national artistic, literary, and cultural traditions do not arise in isolation, but are rather the products of exchange. Recent events have made this topic all the more pressing. Now, as our departments merge into one unit with the shared goal of the transcultural study of Europe, we felt a particular urgency to organize a conference on this theme.

Our conference will include sixteen presentations by national and international graduate students, and features two keynote speakers, Professors Sharon Kinoshita (UC Santa Cruz) and Laura Wittman (Stanford University). We will also host a roundtable discussion featuring five UCLA faculty members: Cécile Guédon, Kalani Michell, Shelleen Greene, Tim Tangherlini, and Yasemin Yildiz.
