Return to the Mountain: In Conversation with Chung Ling

In the late 1970s veteran wuxia film director King Hu travelled to South Korea to shoot two landmark films back-to-back: Legend of the Mountain (1979) and Raining in the Mountain (1979). Both films proved to be landmark works in the history of Chinese-language film; pioneering a new pan-Asian co-production model, experimenting with new modes of storytelling influenced by Buddhism, Taoism, and Peking Opera, and redefining the aesthetic model for wuxia cinema. Chung Ling, who produced both films and wrote the screenplay for Legend of the Mountain will reflect on these monumental films in dialogue with Michael Berry.

Chung Ling (鍾玲) is a writer, scholar, translator and screenwriter. She has taught at SUNY, Albany, Hong Kong University, National Sun Yat-sen University, (where she served as Dean of Liberal Arts,) Hong Kong Baptist University, (where she served as Chair Professor and Dean of Arts and Associate Vice President), University of Macau, (where she served as founding Master of Cheng Yu Tung College). She is the founder of the Dream of the Red Chamber Award, a prestigious bi-annual literary prize for contemporary Chinese fiction. Professor Chung is the author of numerous books in Chinese, which range from prose to poetry and from literary criticism to short stories. She was married to the film director King Hu from 1977-1991, during which time she participated in the production of several of his major works.
