This year marks the 30th anniversary of Performance Workshop, Taiwan’s leading theater company since its inaugural performance in 1985. In this lecture, Performance Workshop’s founder and artistic director Stan Lai will discuss his career, major works, and latest explorations.

Stan Lai 賴聲川(PhD, Dramatic Art, UC Berkeley) is one of the most celebrated theatre artists in the Chinese-speaking world. He is founder and artistic director of Performance Workshop in Taiwan and artistic director of the Wuzhen Theatre Festival in China. He has written and directed more than thirty plays, including the contemporary classics Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land (暗戀桃花源, 1986) and The Village (寶島一村, 2008). He has also directed numerous films, television dramas, and operas. In addition to touring around the world with Performance Workshop, Stan Lai has taught at UC Berkeley, Stanford University, Taipei National University of the Arts, the Shanghai Theatre Academy, and the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing. Most recently he has written and lectured widely on how to foster creativity.
