Samvel Grigoryan is a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures and the Promise Armenian Institute at UCLA. He gained his PhD in Medieval History at the Center for Medieval Studies of the Paul-Valéry University of Montpellier, France (2021). In 2022-2024, he prepared the first complete edition of the “Flower of the Histories of the East” by Hetʽum of Koṙikōs (translation from Middle French into modern Armenian and commentary) at the Mesrop Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts. From May 2023 until October 2024, Samvel Grigoryan worked at the Department for Byzantine Research of the Institute for Medieval Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences as a Postdoctoral Researcher and the “Entangled Charters of Anatolia (1200-1300, ENCHANT)” project collaborator.
Samvel Grigoryan’s doctoral research explores the Armenian-Frankish and Greek nobility of Mediterranean Armenia (Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia) within a broad historical, geographical and prosopographical context.
Samvel Grigoryan also focuses on diplomacy, administration, and document Production in the Middle Ages, mobility, migration and Intercultural communication in Europe and the Middle East, history of Armenia, Georgia, Caucasus, Medieval Levant and Latin East, Byzantine history, and so on.
