Early modern and modern period social and economic historian of the Ottoman Empire. Her current research focuses on the social and cultural history of the cosmopolitan Levantine merchant communities in the Ottoman Empire from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries, with an emphasis on the impact they had as merchants, cultural ambassadors, and go-betweens, bridging the divide between the Ottoman Empire and Europe.
